Inspirational Coaching Question
Helena Clayton, a wonderful colleague and leadership development expert, drew my attention to the following Nietzsche thought experiment, and I wanted to share it with you as well.
"this life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and every sigh and everything unutterable - small or great - in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence'.
In other words, what if you had to re-live your current life, over, and over, and over again – your ultimate personal "Groundhog Day" for those of you who know the movie π – how would you want to live your life then? What choices would you make moving forward? What doors would you want to close? What doors would you want to open? What paths would you want to carve?
Feel free to journal or paint your response, and be sure to use a pen or brush. Our brain processes information differently when we write vs. type...

Speaking of doors π, I shared the following poem with one of my coaching clients π«Άπ½ a couple of days ago, and I decided to share it with all of you as well.
Do you sometimes get in a creative rut, or feel stuck, or feel like your wheel is spinning empty? I know I do! And when this happens, what helps me is to dust myself off, get up, and "literally" go and open the door!
THE DOOR by Miroslav Holub
π» Go and open the door. Maybe outside there’s a tree, or a wood, a garden, or a magic city.
Go and open the door. Maybe a dog’s rummaging. Maybe you’ll see a face, or an eye, or the picture of a picture.
Go and open the door. If there’s a fog it will clear.
Go and open the door. Even if there’s only the darkness ticking, even if there’s only the hollow wind, even if nothing is there, go and open the door.
At least there’ll be a draught. π»
Dina – which door have you been keeping shut that may benefit from a draught?

OPEN THE DOOR by Otis Redding
Staying with the "opening doors" theme - as you listen to Otis' rendition, think about what in your life today is begging you (like Otis is) to open that door...

3 tips for your Professional Experience section on your CV
I do a lot of career coaching, which typically includes reviewing my client's CV, and making suggestions for improvements.
Your Professional Experience is one of the most critical sections on your CV – so here are 3 tips how to make it stand out.
NB: I recently created an automated e-mail sequence for new subscribers. Within the e-mail sequence, I share the below 3 tips. But as the majority of you have subscribed to my newsletter before I created that sequence, I decided to share those tips with you in this January newsletter as well.
Tip 1
One of the first things to pay attention to is the first word at the start of every sentence within your Professional Experience section. Many people use nouns or, what I would term, "weak verbs" - i.e. verbs that leave me, the reader, guessing what your role actually was. It is key that you start each one of those sentences with an "active" verb, that best describes what your role actually was.
To help you do this, I've compiled a list of action verbs (below) that I share with my clients. Feel free to use it as inspiration for your next choice of verb in this critical section of your CV.
Tip 2
Use present tense. The action verb list is in the past tense for ease of reference, but I find that using the present tense conveys a more active and vibrant feeling vs. the past tense or nouns. So, for example, say "Moderate a research panel for top 500 Pharma executives" instead of "Moderated ....". This is not a must – more of a personal preference. So, see what works best for you, and use that. But key is to use it consistently!
Tip 3
Don't make the recruiter guess what you mean. In most cases, this will not be in your favour. This means:
- Do not use acronyms, unless you've spelled them out at least once.
- Avoid technical jargon. You can't assume that the recruiter is as versed in your area of expertise as you are.
- Try to re-use words used in the job description, in case the company uses an automated screening system.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: Be Specific Specific Specific when it comes to YOUR role, what you did, and what you achieved. Generic statements like "Managed administrative tasks" or "Supported HR projects" or "etc." are not your friend... The more specific you can be, the higher your chance of peaking interest.

Bonus tip
Let's face it, AI is here to stay, and you could use it to write your CV. Personally, I would not recommend to have it write your CV from scratch... However, once you have your own draft, it can be a helpful tool for editing purposes, or to simplify your wording (if too technical). So, feel free to use it if you'd like, but be sure to review, adjust, and amend as needed. And make sure that what you put forward is "true", sounds like "you", and represents well how you'd like to present yourself to your next potential employer.
AI has a tendency to use certain expressions or words over, and over, and over again... not just in the text they suggest to you, but to everyone else using the tool. So, just be mindful of that as you use it to write your CV, motivation letter, or social media post.
Your CV is your business card - all it needs to do is peak enough interest for the recruiter and hiring manager to want to learn more about you, and invite you to a phone or personal interview... The real magic and charm then happens when you get to meet them.
Not a book - but rather an Irish blessing as we start 2025...
May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
May the road rise to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home And may the hand of a friend always be near.
May green be the grass you walk on, May blue be the skies above you, May pure be the joys that surround you, May true be the hearts that love you.
Wishing you a fulfilling and prosperous 2025!
